blaster mobileApril, 1, 2004 Annapolis, MD. - Mr. Stacey A. Stone brings a state-of-the-art paint stripping and cleaning process called "Soda Blasting" to the Mid-Atlantic region with the opening of his new business Chesapeake Soda Clean, Inc. As its name implies, the process delivers a bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) based medium by compressed air onto fiberglass, metals, wood, brick, block, mortar and many other surfaces. Some of the many uses include removal of anti-fouling bottom paint from boats, paint from antique/classic cars and trucks, graffiti from buildings, mold remediation, fire/smoke restoration, brick/block/stone cleaning and historic building restorations.

Mobile Soda Blaster"Soda blasting is similar in concept to sand blasting," says Stone, "but much kinder and gentler to the surface we are cleaning and to the environment". The soda blasting process will clean the most vulnerable surfaces with unequaled results." Soda blasting is faster than many other paint-stripping methods and, because the process does not require the masking of glass, chrome or rubber, most cars can be stripped in just hours without the risk of surface damage. Baking soda is an all natural, 100% biodegradable and water soluble blasting medium. While the marine application of soda blasting is fairly new, the technique has been around for several decades. It was used to safely clean and restore the exterior surface of the Statue of Liberty in the 1980's. Soda blasting was offered as a more efficient, non-damaging and environmentally-friendly alternative to chemical paint stripping and sandblasting of autos by manufacturers in the 1990's.

"The difference between soda blasting and sand blasting can be compared to the difference between throwing snowballs and throwing rocks," says Stone. "The process is gentle enough to remove many coatings without harming the substrate, will not distort or warp metal, and can be done wet or dry."

Stone is a retired, 26-year veteran of the Montgomery County, MD. Fire and Rescue Department and a long-time business owner. His experience with the fire service laid the groundwork for his interest in soda blasting. "There are many similarities," he says. In addition to the handling of high-pressure equipment, the user of that equipment must wear a respirator --- much like a firefighter would wear to enter a burning building. "Certain safety precautions must be taken in both lines of work," he adds.

Other applications for this non-destructive process include light surface rust removal, priming of commercial food preparation surfaces for sanitizing, and the safe cleaning of soft limestone monuments and other delicate surfaces.
